- Originally called Line A, it was one of the first lines built by the Nord-Sud company before being renamed Line 12 in 1930 following the merger with CMP and its integration into the Paris Metro network.
- Line 12 was designed to connect the districts of Montmartre and Montparnasse, following a "cut-and-cover" excavation method that avoids passing under buildings by primarily following the layout of the streets.
- The Concorde station on Line 12 is known for its unique decoration, where white tiles on its walls are arranged to spell out the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen of 1789.
- Another standout station for its design is Assemblée Nationale, which features murals related to national sovereignty, including temporary portraits of French presidents.
- The line is planned to be extended both south to Issy-les-Moulineaux and north to La Plaine in Saint-Denis to improve connectivity in the Paris metropolitan area.
